August 2019 Healthy Mama Feature

Who are you a mom to?

My son is Karsen who is 18 months old. He was a surprise baby (I’m a single mom and was only 22 when i had him) but the best surprise in the whole world!

When and why did you get involved with Fit4Mom? How did you hear about it?

I started Fit4Mom the Friday after Fourth of July last year actually! My neighbor, Brooke Henson, had mentioned it to me at the annual Fourth of July block party our court hosts. I was so out of shape that after the first class I attended I wasn’t able to return for 2 weeks because my body hurt that bad the joke in Hidden Springs is that Stephanie (one of our instructors) thought she killed me and I would never return. But eventually I did and started coming to classes very regularly. Once I had my son I really wanted to get back in to shape but I’ve never been the type of person who can just head to the gym and get a really good workout in. I love the guidance and accountability these classes provide!

What Fit4Mom programs have you participated in (or are planning to!) and what were your favorite parts of them?

At first I was just attending Stroller Strides and loved that my son was able to come with me and meet other children. He was only 6 months old at the time and I didn’t leave the house much so it was great to give him some social interaction. Once I felt strong enough I started adding in a Wednesday night Boost class which ending up being my favorite! I moved to Lewiston in January to start nursing school and was so sad to leave behind the wonderful village of moms and babies I had connected with, as well as the amazing workouts I was getting. Now that we’re back for the summer I was able to start attending Strides again, but not Boost anymore since I work every night.

What's your favorite Fit4Mom moment/memory/experience?

I honestly have too many amazing Fit4Mom memories to choose from, but my favorites would probably be the Moms Night Out events. After having a baby my life changed pretty drastically and I felt distanced from my friends because none of them were in the same boat as me. Having this group of women that I related to and who also were a joy to be around was a really great thing for me.

What keeps you busy when you're not being "mom"? (jobs, hobbies, etc)

Right now I’m home with Karsen all day and work every night from 7-10. During the school year he goes to daycare and he absolutely loves it! I also love nursing school and can’t wait to go back.

What's something interesting that people may not know about you?

Something interesting about me is that I have webbed toes and I passed it on to Karsen! We’re pretty boring so that’s the best I’ve got! {Note from us: Kelsey is not boring - we can vouch for her! :-) }

What future fitness goals do you have for yourself? Leaving for nursing school definitely threw me off my workout game because I was busy 24/7 (at least that’s what it felt like). This summer I’d like to get my strength back that I worked so hard to gain last year. I’d also like to develop a plan to keep me on track for when I head back to Lewiston again in August.
