Our January Mama of the MonthJennie Hurley
Who are you Mom to?
Mom to CJ (age 4) and Erinn (age 10)
When and why did you get involved with Fit4Mom?
When we moved to Boise 2.5 years ago, I saw some super fit moms working out in my neighborhood that looked like they were having fun and I wondered about how to meet them. Then one of them talked to me one day and invited me to come for a class. I was a little worried that the group wouldn't welcome a stranger but I was so wrong and they made me feel right at home. I started right away taking classes every week. It was a great way to meet other moms!
What Fit4Mom programs have you participated in (or planning to) and what were your favorite parts of them?
I have done in person Stroller Strides, Stroller Barre, and HIIT! I love doing the HIIT without kids sometimes but my favorite is the outdoors Stroller Strides. Working out in the sunshine with all the kids and moms is such a great mood booster for me! Now the online classes are my saviour each week. I love ALL of them, as each teacher is different and I do 2-3 per week. The new addition of yoga weekly is great too! I also have done at least 3 challenges and I love the challenges for keeping me on track and winning prizes. Super fun!
What's your favorite Fit4Mom moment/memory/experience?
My favorite Fit4Mom experience is probably when I hosted a Mom's Night Out my first year. It was so fun to get to know the moms on a more personal level and we had such a great time. I got to meet a couple moms there that I don't see at certain work out classes and we jacuzzied and ate appetizers. I love that this group of moms is so different in some ways but have such similar values of health and fitness.
What keeps you busy when you're not being "mom"?
Besides being a full time mom, I love vegetarian cooking, working out, reading, playing guitar, learning to ski, and I am about to embark on a career counseling training to become certified as a career counselor. I have really enjoyed being at home with the kids, but excited and hopeful to find a job this year as a college counselor (did for 20 years before moving) or career counselor.
What's something interesting that people may not know about you?
Something interesting about me is that even though I was raised by New Age hippie parents, I love NFL football. I am a huge Green Bay Packers fan since I have been brainwashed by my husband for 25 years (ha ha), and we love to try and travel to a game a year in different states and also see friends and family on our travels.
What future fitness goals do you have for yourself?
I want to workout 3-5 times per week and keep going with my intermittent fasting/clean eating that I was doing prior to the holidays. It is HARD to eat super clean in Covid times home with the family, but trying to keep that going! Also I make sure to go outside for physical exercise every day and enjoy our beautiful Boise city!!
What's your tip for surviving a pandemic as a mom?
Take lots of breaks for yourself! If I am getting super crabby with my kids, I try to remember to go off by myself for 10 mins and deep breathe, meditate, hug my dog. It's hard, I will admit, I probably have at least one day a week I end up crying during COVID because of tiredness and frustration. I talk to friends, go outside, exercise, write in my journal, and read in a warm bath with essential oils. Definitely take the time for you where you can and give yourself so much GRACE for days you struggle.
Anything else you want to add?
I am so grateful to be part of such a motivating and fun group of moms who inspire me to be a better mom as well as a healthy person! I love Fit4Mom!
